This course covers a broad array of practical math skills, and in Segment A students will learn to simplify numeric expressions involving rational numbers using the order of operations, solve problems involving percent, and learn that income can be earned in many ways, each requiring a different mathematical formula to calculate. In addition, they will analyze the factors influencing wages and the management of financial resources across the lifespan, comparing and contrasting factors affecting annual gross and taxable income and reporting requirements (e.g., W-2 form and income tax forms). Other topics include making predictions based on survey results or graphs (bar, line, circle, scatterplots, etc.) and computing and understanding the cost of buying and maintaining a car.

Segment B will investigate personal finances, addressing such topics as how responsible consumers use effective resource management to accomplish individual, family, and community goals. Students will learn that using credit cards wisely can benefit consumers in the long-term and that loans are a good way to afford something over an extended time period. Installment buying can be an option in some situations. Calculating simple interest is a good way to estimate monthly payments on borrowed money.
