Segment A of Math Essentials teaches that numbers, measures, expressions, equations, and inequalities can represent mathematical situations and structures in many equivalent forms. This first part of the course takes students through a review of basic arithmetic tasks like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, including work with decimals. They will then move on to working with fractions and percents.

Segment B of this course teaches that patterns are repeating sequences that can be created using everyday objects. An understanding of problem-solving strategies is needed to solve problems using real-world and make-believe situations. It is important to be able to solve and analyze problems related to everyday situations. An understanding of the monetary system and how to count it is necessary in real-life situations. Operations that involve the use of money are similar to numbers and involve a student’s knowledge of basic facts. Part B moves students through graphing functions, polynomials, and factoring.
