Segment A of Mathematics 6 will teach students to apply place value concepts to order and compare decimals, and use the number line to order and compare decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers. Topics include how to apply the associative, commutative, and distributive and/or identity properties to write equivalent forms of expressions, model and compare values of whole numbers, mixed numbers, fractions, and decimals, and apply number theory concepts to calculate the GCF (Greatest Common Factor) and/or LCM (Least Common Multiple) of two numbers. Students will learn to represent whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percent in equivalent forms, as well as develop, analyze, and apply the meaning of ratio, rate, and percent to solve problems.

In Segment B of Mathematics 6, students will learn that patterns exhibit relationships that can be extended, described, and generalized. Relations and functions are mathematical relationships that can be represented and analyzed using words, tables, graphs, and equations. Measures can be estimated by using known referents, and can represent mathematical situations and structures in many equivalent forms. Some questions can be answered by collecting, representing, and analyzing data, and the question to be answered determines the data to be collected, how best to collect it, and how best to represent it. Numerical measures describe the center and spread of numerical data.
